ADB has approved additional funding for a water supply program in the Kyrgyz Republic

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has provided additional financing of $32.35 million for a rural water supply and sanitation development program in northern Kyrgyzstan, that has been showing positive results.

The funds will allow the government to continue implementing the program under the National Development Strategy 2018-2040, which aims to provide drinking water to 95% of settlements and expand centralized water supply to more than 2 million rural residents.

The funding will also increase the number of people accessing safe water in Naryn province from 64,000 to 100,000, and the number of educational and health facilities with separate toilets for women and men will increase from 21 to 37. The program also includes measures aimed at climate change resilience and raising awareness of the local population on the importance of water conservation.

Additional financing consists of a concessional loan and grant from the Asian Development Fund and a contribution from the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic. This year marks the 30th anniversary of ADB's cooperation with the republic, under which more than 217 projects totalling $2.6 billion have been implemented.
