European Commission has familiarised itself with the reclamation works progress in Mailuu-Suu

On 9 October 2024, a delegation from the European Commission, accompanied by the Minister of Emergency Situations, Boobek Azhikeev, visited the former uranium production sites in Mailuu-Suu and got acquainted with the progress of reclamation works.

Mailuu-Suu was formerly a major uranium mining centre, but mining ceased in 1968, leaving behind many radioactive tailings ponds and mining dumps that threatened human life and the environment. In recent years, Kyrgyzstan, thanks to international partners' support, has made significant progress in stabilising hazardous sites.

The European Union has allocated more than €40 million for the remediation of uranium sites in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, which is an important step towards eliminating environmental and sanitary risks. These measures will significantly improve the ecological situation and safety for residents and countries in the region.
