Kyrgyz women gave birth out of wedlock less often

In Kyrgyzstan, there is a noticeable decrease in the number of children born out of wedlock. In 2023, Kyrgyz women gave birth to 145 thousand 977 babies - 28 thousand less than in 2019. But the most important thing is the reduction of children born out of wedlock: their number decreased by 3.2 times.

In 2019, 21% of all newborns were born out of wedlock, and in 2023 this figure fell to 8.1%. A total of 11 thousand 796 children born without official marriage were registered in 2023. At the same time, 85% of them were registered only to mothers, which means that thousands of children are likely to grow up without fathers.

Note that the highest percentage of children born out of wedlock in the last five years was recorded in 2022 - then 23.3% of all newborns, or 34 thousand 978 babies, were born without officially registered marriage of the parents.

The statistics by region is particularly interesting. In general, it shows that in rural areas, the number of children born out of wedlock is higher, 8 thousand 322 against 3 thousand 474 in urban areas. Thus, in Issyk-Kul region 2 thousand 509 children were born out of wedlock during the year, of which 2 thousand 89 were born in rural areas. Jalal-Abad oblast (2.4 thousand children born out of wedlock) and Osh oblast (2 thousand 266 children) were also among the three “leaders”.

The age of mothers giving birth out of wedlock shows interesting trends. In rural areas, women aged 20-24 give birth to children out of wedlock most often, while in urban areas, mothers aged 25-29 are the leaders.

However, among the youngest mothers aged 15 to 19, out-of-wedlock births have fallen to a minimum. While in 2019 there were 16 babies born out of wedlock for every thousand teenage girls, in 2023 there will be only 4. The bulk of children born without a stamp in their passports are still born to women aged 20-34.
