Just a week after his acquittal, Urmat Samayev has been given a post

Urmatbek Samayev, who was recently acquitted by the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic on corruption charges, has been appointed Deputy Plenipotentiary Presidential Representative in Jalal-Abad Oblast. The appointment order was signed by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Adylbek Kasymaliev.

On 13 January, the Supreme Court acquitted Samayev, who was accused of organising a corruption scheme in the municipal enterprise Tokmok Zhyluuluk while working as mayor of Tokmak.

Samayev was detained on 17 April 2023 on suspicion of illegally connecting private houses to the central heating main and receiving part of the proceeds from the scheme. The GKNB estimated the damage at 130 million soms. The first and second instance courts acquitted the ex-mayor under the article ‘Misappropriation or embezzlement of entrusted property’, but sentenced him to a fine of 1 million soms for abuse of office. The Supreme Court cancelled this verdict as well.
