Changes in Russia's Migration Legislation for Labor Migrants Discussed in Bishkek

The Ministry of Labor, Social Security, and Migration of Kyrgyzstan, in collaboration with the "Resource Center for the Elderly," held a large public council meeting on migration. The meeting focused on "The Impact of Changes in Russian Federation Migration Legislation on Labor Migrants: Key Challenges and Consequences."

Against the backdrop of recent legislative changes in Russia affecting foreign workers, the meeting served as an important platform for discussing the main challenges and potential risks faced by labor migrants from Kyrgyzstan. The discussion covered new restrictions and tightened controls over compliance with migration status, which is especially relevant for the more than 350,000 Kyrgyz citizens currently residing in Russia.

Beginning in 2025, new rules will impose deportation measures on citizens without legal grounds to stay in Russia. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation will have the authority to order deportation for administrative violations, and a registry is being established to track foreign nationals who violate migration requirements, enabling stricter federal oversight.

Head of the Migration Policy Department, Mayrambek Beyshenov, emphasized the importance of preparing migrants to comply with the new rules. He added that the Ministry is actively working to inform and prepare citizens before they leave the country, as well as creating employment opportunities for Kyrgyz citizens in the United Kingdom, South Korea, Gulf countries, and Europe.

The meeting was attended by representatives from various ministries and agencies of Kyrgyzstan, international organizations, and experts from Russia, who discussed measures to protect the rights of labor migrants and to ensure safe working conditions for Kyrgyz nationals abroad.
