Kyrgyzstan plans to ban sugar imports into the country for 6 months

Kyrgyzstan is considering the introduction of a temporary ban on the import of white sugar into the country for 6 months. This is reported by the Ministry of Water Industry.

Minister Bakyt Torobaev noted that the main purpose of this step is to support domestic producers and create conditions for increasing yields and quality of sugar beet next year.

This decision was made on December 13, 2024 at a meeting of the Council on Food Security and Nutrition of the Kyrgyz Republic, where the issues of food security of the country were discussed, including the introduction of bans on imports and exports of some agricultural products.

In addition, this year the gross harvest of sugar beet in Kyrgyzstan amounted to 870.2 thousand tons, which is 249.2 thousand tons more compared to the same period last year. This indicator will allow to produce 120 thousand tons of sugar, which will fully meet the domestic consumption of the country.
