Construction of Kambarata HPP-1 may turn out to be cheaper than expected

Kambarata HPP-1 is not just a new plant, it is a way to our energy independence, development of economy and opening new opportunities for the people, said the head of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Zhaparov.

He noted that the construction project of this HPP is supported by the World Bank.

“Calculations show that the cost of the project will be lower than the expected amount (author's note - before that the sum of $5-$6 billion was announced). This HPP will become an important tool for effective water resources management in Central Asia under conditions of expected future ecological water crises,” Zhaparov emphasized.

The head of the Cabinet emphasized that the republic was able to find initial funds for the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railroad and the Kambarata HPP and was able to allocate billions for the feasibility study.

“This proves to global financial institutions and other countries that Kyrgyzstan is capable of financing large projects and has the will to implement them. Therefore, we have partners for the construction of Kambarata HPP-1”, - added the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Speaking about the completed and upcoming work in the energy sector Akylbek Zhaparov noted that in 2024 small HPPs with a capacity of 48.3 MW were put into operation, the CASA-1000 project was completed, as well as continuing projects for the construction of solar and wind power plants and reconstruction of Toktogul HPP.

“Small HPPs have been put into operation: Bala-Saruu, Ysyk-Ata-1, Kainama, Kok-Art, Isfayram-1, Kurak-Tektir and others. Currently, 33 small HPPs with a total capacity of 121.5 MW are operating in the country. Six more small HPPs will be commissioned by the end of the year. Reconstruction of Toktogul HPP by the end of 2025 will increase the capacity by an additional 240 MW. In addition, the capacity of Kambar-Ata HPP-2 will be increased by 120 MW by 2028, and the capacity of Uch-Korgon HPP, which is now 180 MW, will increase to 216 MW (+36) by 2027,” he concluded.
