In the EAEU, I prefer to borrow from myself. Domestic debt is growing against the backdrop of declining external debt

January 1 this year compared to the same period in 2024, public debt in national currency increased in all EAEU countries (excluding Belarus). This is reported by the EEC.

The debt increased most strongly in Kazakhstan - by 17.2% and in Russia - by 13.5%. In Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, the growth amounted to 6.2% and 2.2%, respectively.

At the same time, external debt (in dollar equivalent) decreased: in Armenia by 0.7%, in Kyrgyzstan by 3% and in Russia by 7.8%. The exception is Kazakhstan, where external debt, on the contrary, increased by 1.7%.

In general, during this period the EAEU countries borrowed more domestically, while external borrowing declined. This was especially noticeable in Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, where the share of domestic debt increased by 5 percentage points, reaching 50% in Armenia and 31% in Kyrgyzstan of total government debt. In Russia and Kazakhstan, domestic debt also remains the main debt - 82% and 74%, respectively.
