The modernisation project is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The agreement with the bank was signed on 2 March 2023. The first hydro unit was overhauled in 2024 to keep the plant running until the main works begin.
The project involves increasing the installed capacity from 7.6 to 10 MW, increasing annual power generation by 56% to 53.5 million kWh, and increasing efficiency to 90%. The plant is expected to extend its service life by 30-40 years.
On 23 January 2025, the first stage of the tender to select the general contractor was completed. From the nine international companies that applied, participants were selected for the next stage - technical and financial evaluation. The reconstruction should be completed by the end of 2027.
