12/13/2024, 09:30The Eurasian Development Bank signed a trilateral Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Commerce and the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan. The document records the parties' intentions to implement the Suusamyr-Kokomeren HPP cascade construction project on the Kokomeren River.
The project, included in the National Energy Program of Kyrgyzstan until 2035, provides for the construction of three hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 1 thousand 305 MW. It is aimed at increasing the country's energy capacity, meeting the growing demand for electricity and reducing the carbon footprint.
The concluded Memorandum provides for EDB's financial support in the preparation of key documents, including a pre-feasibility study, socio-environmental impact analysis and development of a financial and economic model. The project implementation will be part of the bank's large-scale program “Water and Energy Complex of Central Asia” aimed at developing regional cooperation in the water and energy sector.
“The implementation of the Suusamyr-Kokomereen HPP cascade project with a capacity of 1.3 GW will strengthen the country's energy independence, meet domestic demand for electricity and turn Kyrgyzstan into a leading exporter of clean energy in the region. It will be a powerful stimulus for the economy and will create thousands of new jobs,” said Deputy Minister of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan Sanzhar Bolotov.
The project is also in line with the EDB's strategic priorities for 2022-2026, which include hydropower development and modernization of energy infrastructure in Kyrgyzstan.
