"The main pain of business is the courts" - Askar Sydykov

Askar Sydykov, head of the International Business Council (IBC) in Kyrgyzstan, identified five key problems faced by entrepreneurs in the country.

The first is the relationship with the state: bureaucracy, difficulties with permits and the judicial system.

The second most important barrier is limited access to financing.

"High interest rates and strict collateral requirements hinder business start-up and expansion," Sydykov said.

The third problem is the geography and scale of the market: a small population and mountainous terrain limit growth opportunities. In addition, international agreements and customs barriers hinder business.

The fifth difficulty is the lack of an effective mechanism for resolving disputes between entrepreneurs themselves. Once again we are stuck with the judicial system.

"If I could change one thing, it would be the judicial system. A fair and independent court is what is needed not only by business, but also by the state," he summarised.
